Ed McMahon, a fixture on U.S. late-night television for 30 years as the full-throated announcer and sidekick for Johnny Carson on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” died on Tuesday at age 86, his spokesman said. The veteran TV personality, best known for his nightly introduction of Carson in a deep, booming voice with the drawn-out line, “Heeeeeeeeere’s Johnny!” died at a Los Angeles-area hospital, spokesman Howard Bragman said.
Chris Brown gets probation for assault on Rihanna
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty on Monday to assaulting his former girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, in an agreement with prosecutors that calls for him to spend five years of probation and attend courses on domestic violence. Brown, singer of the hits “Run It” and “Kiss Kiss,” will be formally sentenced August 5. He had faced four years in prison if convicted in a trial on charges of assault and a making a criminal threat. There was no plea deal on a second charge.
Peas manager charged in Perez Hilton fight
TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) – Toronto police have charged the manager of chart-topping hip-hop band the Black Eyed Peas with assault after a confrontation with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton at Sunday’s MuchMusic Video Awards. Liborio Molina, 36, was ordered to appear at Old City Hall in Toronto on August 5 to answer the assault charge.
Reality TV stars Jon & Kate to split
NEW YORK (Reuters) – The stars of the reality television show “Jon & Kate Plus Eight” said on Monday’s episode that they had decided to split up after 10 years of marriage. “Kate and I have decided to separate,” Jon Gosselin said just over 40 minutes into a one-hour episode of the TLC cable network show. The announcement ended months of speculation about the couple, whose lives along with their eight children — twins and 5-year-old sextuplets — are the subject of the program.
Streisand hits jazz on first studio album in 4 years
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Barbra Streisand has joined forces with Canadian jazz singer-pianist Diana Krall on her first studio album in four years, which is set for release on September 29, her record label said on Monday. Columbia Records said the album “Love Is The Answer” is Streisand’s first full-length collection of new studio recordings since 2005’s “Guilty Pleasures” and her first album since “Live In Concert 2006.”
O’Neal says dying Farrah Fawcett has agreed to marry

“Transformers” aims to recharge U.S. box offices
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Big-budget “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” hits U.S. movie theaters on Wednesday, aiming to recharge box offices in a summer season that has lost momentum after 2009’s strong start. Early reviews are mixed for director Michael Bay’s effects-filled story of an alien vs. robot war on Earth that follows 2007 smash hit “Transformers,” which raked in more than $700 million worldwide for its backers at DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures, a unit of media giant Viacom Inc.
Springsteen, Ticketmaster battle escalates
NASHVILLE (Billboard) – Bruce Springsteen’s manager has come out swinging against the Newark Star Ledger and Ticketmaster Chairman Barry Diller following a news report that the rocker’s organization kept many of the best tickets to a recent show out of the public’s hands. The Ledger reported last week that about 2,300 total tickets for a May 21 performance at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., were held back for “friends of the band, the record label and the New Jersey Sports and Exhibition Authority, which operates the venue.”
Jessica Simpson returns to reality TV
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Six years after she became a breakout reality TV star with MTV’s “Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica,” Jessica Simpson is returning to MTV Networks for a VH1 series targeted for a 2010 launch. “The Price of Beauty” will feature Simpson traveling the world to meet regular women as well as some local pop culture icons. Simpson will study local fashions, dietary fads and beauty regimes and even participate in some of the extreme practices she discovers.
